When Justin and I met for his Akron senior pictures shoot, one of the first things he told me was, “I don’t like my smile.” That’s not an uncommon thing for…well…anyone to say, to be honest. Put someone in front of a camera and their insecurities are bound to surface, but as Justin proves in several of the pictures in this preview, there’s no reason for any of us to be self-conscious.

I speak from experience. I don’t like my smile either. I tend to show too much gums, especially when I find something really funny. Drives me crazy. I’ve tried to perfect the three-quarter, casual smile with very mixed results. But as I’ve learned over the past couple of years, everyone’s smile is different and beautiful in its own way. Your smile is uniquely you and uniquely yours, so don’t hide it and don’t be afraid to let it loose it when someone sticks a camera in your face.

You’ll see that it didn’t take long for Justin to warm up during our shoot. Taking some shots of him with his Honda dirt bike contributed to that, I’m sure, and so did me reminding him that his mom would like to see at least a few pictures of him smiling. These are a few of my favorites from our shoot in Wadsworth. Visit Windowsill Photography if you’re interested in having senior portraits taken, and be sure to check us out on Facebook!

Akron family pictures: A couple of cuties

The temperatures are dropping here in Ohio — tomorrow’s forecast doesn’t even have us sniffing the 30s — so I’m happy to post some family pics from last month, when fall had settled in, the leaves had recently turned and you could do an outdoor family photo shoot without risk of losing a couple of fingers to frostbite!

We found ourselves in a gorgeous setting when these two cuties brought their parents with them for our Akron photo shoot. Big brother set a great example by sitting still long enough to pose for some fun shots but his sister just wasn’t having it. In the second picture below, I had to lure her close with some of my camera equipment just long enough to snap the shot. No worries, though — when doing a shoot with kids this age, posing mostly goes out the door and adventure time takes over. We had a great time following these two kiddos around for an hour, and we even sneaked in a couple shots of Mom and Dad!

Here are some of my favorites from the day. If you’re interested in having some Akron family pictures taken, please visit Windowsill Photography!

Akron family pictures: A fun fall day

I’ve spent all but one year of my life in Ohio. It’s by no means the most glamorous state to call home, especially if you’re a sports fan living anywhere near Cleveland (as I am), but Ohio its charms. There’s Cedar Point, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Ohio is the birthplace for John Glenn, Steven Spielberg, Paul Newman, seven different US presidents…and the hot dog (no joke); this may be the only place where you can wear shorts one day and a snowsuit the next (I’ve done it); and as a kid, I always loved saying that my state was “round on the ends and ‘HI’ in the middle.” But the thing I love most about Ohio is its beauty in the fall months.

My appreciation for fall in Ohio has really grown since I started Windowsill Photography, and you can see why in some of these pictures. It doesn’t get much prettier than an October afternoon in Ohio, as far as I’m concerned, especially when you’re hanging out with a family like this that loves having a good time on a photo shoot. It was a brisk day at River Styx park in Wadsworth, but these guys were troopers and even obliged when I asked them to crawl over dead tree limbs and through prickers only to climb down into a creek bed. I promised them it would be worth the hassle, and hopefully they’ll agree after seeing these.

Here are some of my favorites from the day. Thanks for a great time, guys!

Akron senior pictures ~ Bryana

I love working with seniors. My goal is to have fun with all my clients on all my shoots, but high school seniors just make it easy. We had a blast doing Bryana’s Akron senior pictures recently, and we were treated to some absolutely beautiful light. Bryana was a natural in front of the camera, and by the end of the shoot she barely needed any instruction at all.

Here are some favorites from our day in Wadsworth. Fortunately, you can’t see the swarm of mosquitoes that attacked us in the woods, but it was well worth it. Good luck during your senior year, Bryana!

Jamie and Michael: Akron wedding photography preview

Outdoor weddings are tough. When the weather cooperates, an outdoor wedding is gorgeous and a ton of fun. You have the freedom to do so much more in the great outdoors than you can in the confines of a church or another indoor venue, and everything just feels so much more open and natural. Of course, when the weather doesn’t cooperate, get ready to adjust on the fly!

Jamie and Michael had a lovely outdoor Akron wedding this weekend, but there were more than a few raindrops to dodge throughout the day. In fact, the start of the ceremony needed to be pushed back a bit when the skies absolutely opened up and drenched the grounds about 15 minutes before Jamie was scheduled to walk down the aisle with her dad. But Jamie, Michael and their families had prepared well, setting up a couple large tents to provide shelter in the case of just such a scenario.

Fortunately, while the rain came down in buckets for a while, it didn’t last long and we were able to enjoy the rest of the day. The soggy surroundings made the pictures a little challenging but we still managed to fill up a couple memory cards! Here are a few highlights from the day with more to follow soon. Check out some of Jamie and Michael’s engagement photos here, and learn more about our Akron and Cleveland wedding photography.

Congratulations, Jamie and Michael!

Right in their own backyard

Posted: October 3rd, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Family, Little Ones, Photography, Windowsill Photography | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , | 1 Comment »

Akron family photography

Often, the trickiest part of a photo shoot is settling on the location. While I am more than willing to find a spot for a portrait session, I first encourage my clients to choose a location that carries some significance to them. And because I do my best to avoid shooting at the same spots too often, I love it when the client has a place in mind.

Even if it’s their backyard! We talked about hitting up some nearby parks when we set up the shoot with Kelly, Steve and their awesome family, but ultimately decided we didn’t need to go anywhere — their backyard worked perfectly. When I first started Windowsill Photography Studio, I wouldn’t have guessed you could do an entire shoot in the confines of someone’s backyard, but this is now the third time I’ve done just that and I love the intimacy it produces. People just feel more comfortable in their own familiar surroundings, which leads to genuine smiles and beautiful, more natural photos.

We had a great time in Kelly and Steve’s backyard, and they even got the family dog to pitch in during their shoot. Here are just a few of my favorites, including the girls’ attempt at synchronized handstands. Thanks for a memorable evening, guys!

Olmsted Falls family pictures: Daddy’s girls

Cuyahoga County family photography

My wife and I have three kids, so needless to say, our house can often be crazy. But with one girl and two boys, we also have some semblance of balance within our craziness. My daughter can confide in my wife for the types of pre-teen questions that dads are ill-equipped to handle (that list grows by the day), and my boys can turn to me for all the gross, dirty, nasty boy things that moms would rather not have to even think about. Even better, no gender ever really reigns supreme in our house: sometimes, Legos rule the day, and others, the boys have to sit through a “Good Luck, Charlie” marathon on Disney Channel. Ah, balance.

I had the privilege of taking some Olmsted Falls family pictures of this awesome family. They obviously skew toward one gender, but by the look on his face, Dad couldn’t be any happier about it. Balance goes out the window when you’re outnumbered 5-to-1, and they definitely make it work. During our time at Fortier Park, these girls were the life of the party, particularly the youngest, a little firecracker who couldn’t wait for me to turn the camera her way!

Here are some of my favorite shots from the day, including a couple that prove boys and girls agree on one thing: Mom and Dad kissing is just gross! Good luck, Dad!

Ashley and Adam’s Akron wedding

currens-jones-preview2-01

I posted a quick preview from Ashley and Adam’s beautiful wedding at the Red Run Bison and Horse Farm in Marshallville back in June. Now that I’m wrapping up their gallery this week, it’s time to offer up a closer look at this absolutely gorgeous Akron area wedding.

As you can see, this group liked to have some fun, especially the bride. For proof, just check out those shoes she was wearing in one of the photos near the bottom of the post. Nice! As another example, while I was making my way around the venue prior to the reception, taking photos of all the little details that had been planned to perfection, I received word that the bride was requesting my services. Wondering what photo opp was awaiting me, I walked into the room where Ashley and her bridesmaids were getting ready to find a table full of chicken nuggets and French fries. Seems the bridal party had a hankerin’ for some McDonald’s, and Ashley wanted me to capture the carnage. Awesome!

There are so many great shots to choose from but these are some of my absolute favorites, along with the photos from the earlier preview. Also, be sure to check out Ashley and Adam’s engagement pictures. Thanks again for sharing your day with me, guys! (And a special thanks to Spencer, who stepped into the assistant’s shoes for this wedding and did one heck of a job!)

Wadsworth family portraits: A lively crew

Wadsworth famiy portraits - Windowsill Photography

When I head out for a family photo shoot, I hope to not only deliver some memorable pictures (of course), but also to have a bit of fun during our hour together. As you can see, we didn’t have any problem having fun during this recent Wadsworth family portrait shoot.

With the grandparents, three siblings and their spouses, and nine grandkids, this group of 17 total was a joy to hang out with at Hubbard Valley Park in Seville. Anytime you get this many people together for one shoot, the risk of complications can run rather high. After all, lots of people can lead to lots of stress and conflict, but aside from one or two minor hiccups with some of the kiddos, everything went smoothly and — bonus — the threatening skies held off just long enough for us to get our hour in.

Here are some of the favorites from our afternoon together. Be sure to check us out on Facebook to follow everything we’re doing at Windowsill Photography!

Akron engagement photography: Megan and Ethan

Akron engagement photographer

We headed out for Megan and Ethan’s engagement photos exactly one year to the day before they’d be walking down the aisle and saying “I do.” We didn’t realize, however, that June 21 also was the first day of summer, and fittingly, we were treated to an absolutely gorgeous morning.

I love discovering new locations to shoot, and on this day, we set up shop at the Nature Realm in Akron. As you can see, we had all sorts of great spots to choose from, so many that we ran a little long and I came home with a few more shots than normal. Needless to say, this won’t be my last visit to the Nature Realm.

Here are a few favorites from our Akron engagement photography shoot. Congrats to Megan and Ethan. Can’t wait for your big day next summer!
